On October 20, 2014, in Chicago, Illinois, Laquan McDonald a 17-year-old Black teenager was shot 16 times – point blank range – by officer Jason Van Dyke.
It would not be until 2018, due to the persistent and tireless work of journalist Jamie Kalven which helped to uncover the details behind the murder of the teenager.
Rahm Emmanuel the then mayor and Cook County State Attorney Anita Alvarez saw the video which left no ambiguity even to a casual observer that officer Jason van Dyke executed Laquan McDonald; they both chose to bury the evidence instead of holding the officer accountable. As if that weren’t enough corruption of elected officials, a judge ruled that the three officers who lied to help cover-up the crime are not guilty. This example leaves no room for one to argue that the justice system works for everyone. For Blacks, the system is not just not working, it works against Blacks; it is a very corrupt system.
