So, the following scenario was no surprise to some of us who have watched GOP Leaders serving as Trump’s lackey, defending his collaboration with United States’ enemies and enabling him to destroy American democracy. On Thursday July 30 at a Congressional hearing in Capitol Hill, Mike Pompeo, US Secretary of State, was asked about Trump’s suggestion to delay the elections. It was a simple question with a straightforward answer, even a smart fifth grader could answer in a heartbeat.
A question which did not require any sacrifice on the part of the Secretary, a question which is a core pillar of the Constitution of the United States, a question which answer is provided in the very Constitution Mr. Pompeo took an oath to defend, and yet Mike Pompeo couldn’t bring himself to provide the most straightforward answer. He rambled some nonsense; in the end, he suggested that the Department of Justice (DOJ) would make that determination.
To be clear, the Constitution is very clear on this topic; Congress and Congress only can modify any aspect of the election (date change, postponement, etc.), not the President, not DOJ. Even an average seventh grader would be able to answer that question without any difficulty, but Mike Pompeo worried about Trump watching him, Mike worried about losing his job if he provided the correct answer. Those are the people who represent the United States of America on the world stage.
